Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-26-386

I Use the Update Wizard for downloading Updates. With the latest Update my Ubuntu Dapper with Gnome, install a new Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-26-686 & 386. That brings a Problem by starting Gnome. My Notebook start and boot normal to the Login Screen, then Gnome try to start and hangs by loading the Desktop. From the Login Screen repeating a Ubuntu Sound immediately.

When I boot with 2.6.15-25-686 kernel everything works normal.

I am having what I think is the same problem with the latest kernel 2.6.15-26-386.
Here is more information. It looks like similar hardware:

Everything was working well with my Ubuntu 6.06 computer until the upgrade containing the new 2.6.15-26-386 kernel was installed. The boot up starts normally until the login screen comes up. Normally there is a short drum sound when the login screen opens but now the drum sound keeps going and going and going. After that point the computer is unusably slow. If at the grub screen I load the 2.6.15-25-386 kernel everything is fine.

I just updated from Breezy to Dapper and have come across this issue. The Dapper upgrade has installed the 2.6.15.26-386 kernel image and since then, the computer is almost unusable at initial bootup and the Ubuntu drums continually repeat.

Once the repeating stops, the PC returns to normal performance (AFAIK), however, sound is now unusable.

I have a VIA KM266Pro chipset with a VIA VT8235 South Bridge. Audio is all onboard. The motherboard user manual states the audio specifications as:
- AC'97 Digital Audio Controller integrated,
- AC'97 Audio CODEC on board.

Since this is my first Dapper kernel, I am unable to revert to the most recent kernel as for me this is 2.6.12.10 and is likely incompatible with Dapper.

Also, I notice that there is what appears to be a duplicate - bug#53207.

This indeed looks like a duplicate to bug#53207. I'm using a Jetway 625EMP800 motherboard on the system I have the problem with. Disabling sound for a particular user by taking that user out of the audio group keeps the repeated sound (and any sound!) from happening, but the drumming or repeated sound still happens when the login screen is up.

(Also the default screensaver hangs the system - that may be related - I'll have to investigate that later on.)

When you can get past the login splash screen (as I frequently can) the PC is very sluggish, whilst the sounds are doing the repeating effect.

If you leave the PC a while to finish repeating the noise, I find that most of the time I am able to play audio normally (i.e. watch TV, listen to MP3's, or adjust the Sound theme from System > Preferences > Sound).

If a recording of the repeating sounds is required let me know and I will upload it.

see http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/7/19/14 for details.

i backported Daniels patch for 2.6.15-26.45 and attached it.
for me it fixes the described problems on various VIA integrated bords.

I got a newer revision of the same kernel-image as it seemed to have been up-rev'd for the upcoming point release of Dapper.

I believe this bug should be a show-stopper to the release of Dapper.1 as from what I have read above it will cause issues for all those with Via boards.

I am sure many people will have waited for the point release before upgrading (for stability reasons) and to upgrade and get this kernel would be disastorous. It is much harder to roll back to a good kernel when doing a dist-upgrade or having done a fresh install.

If the -26 kernel should be the default kernel of Dapper.1, then yes, this should be a blocker, as this kernel is unusable for me and it seems quite some more people.

If, however, the -25 kernel is default: Then go ahead with Dapper.1.

My 2 cents.

As you can see i use the ltest kernel with VIA chipset _AND_ SATA.
I do not face any of the problems above.

The difference is probably that i use a Soundblaster Life and not the onboard AC97 soundcard.

Would not the linux-k7 be more appropriate?

I am getting a little confused.

Having an AMD Sempron, does that mean I should be using K7 kernel package? The 386 one has been installed since I was running Breezy on the same spec'd machine.

How would I safely and easily switch to the K7 kernel, what effect will it have on my other software and will it fix my issue?

David,

be pragmatic - install it, and if it boots, all is well. If not, simply boot the old kernel (which is still there!) and remove the newly installed kernel.

sudo apt-get install linux-k7

You should notice no change in how your system operates. To be honest, I
suggest sticking with the -386 kernel anyway.

Hi,

It has been a while since there were any updates to this bug and also it is yet to be triaged. Given Ben suggested staying with the 386 kernel I am curious as to when a new version will be available without the sound issues.

Are there any ideas?

Cheers,
Whytey

before this bug gets closed and falls into oblivion, i have a last request to people affected by this bug:

would you please:

- append the bootparameter "acpi=off" or
- try to reserve any IRQ except "11" in BIOS

and report if sound issues are gone and post the output of:

- "dmesg"
- "lspci -n" (if not already posted)
- "cat /proc/interrupts"

for the working and non working variant

I have an Asrock K7S41GX/E/M/ASR mb and noticed this Problem too!
I'm moving to Simply Mepis 6.1 DVD because Ubuntu 5.10 and 6.06.1 both became totally unusable after the upgrades! 5.10 will not even boot, because of a manual fix EXT-3 Partition Problem, and if that should ever get fixed, Open Office freezes, on 3 Characters input in Writer. 6.06.1 the sound does not work, the video is very slow. No printer I have works anymore, even after Upgrades, and a Bug List upgrade that was supposed to fix the problem (Ante K.) Open GL does not work anymore. Ubuntu was very nice, to start with, but the upgrades made it "Real Bad!" Perhaps in six months I'll come back and see if these problems got fixed!
