Possibly the same issue as #504254

After several flickers X starts successfully in low graphics mode.

This issue was happening every time yesterday, but today X always starts up correctly... really can't imagine what might have changed to influence this.

OK, it turns out to be the use of the nomodeset kernel parameter which triggers the problem

So if there is no problem without nomodeset, you might want to change the bug status to invalid?

Apologies, I hadn't realised that support for running with nomodeset had been intentionally yanked. Of course, I had my reasons for using it (e.g. making suspend to disk work properly) but I guess I can close this invalid in the name of "progress" :-/
