Downgrading all firefox* packages to previous version (3.6+nobinonly-0ubuntu2) has solved the issue.
Beware, bad-version-firefox is still running eventhough you closed the window and it has disappeared. Kill command needs to be used to really close the app.

Don't worry, seconds after I reported the bug there was an "update" fixing
that.

I am affected by the bug - though I'm using ftp.iinet.net.au instead of the main server which may be slowing down the update which fixes it (as Mario Rugiero mentioned).

Using the main server (archive.ubuntu), a new build (0ubuntu4) is available. update-manager reports the changes as "No search providers or default search provider in 3.6+nobinonly-0ubuntu3; fix syntax issue in bugfix for bmo 534663" - I'll install it and try.

  @jim weaver
You shouldn't be experiencing this bug as it happened with the initial
release of Firefox 3.6 6 months ago. Please file a new bug if you are
experiencing something similar.
