Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

I have a Dell Studio 1535 and I have problems with the keyboard. I've used Jaunty and now using Karmic, but I'm still experiencing problems. Sometimes when I type, a key randomly gets "stuck" and repeats, until I press a key again (it doesn't matter if I press the same key or any other key). I've also used Kubuntu and experienced the same there too. It's very hard to reproduce because it's random. I've also tried Windows Vista and Windows 7, but there were no issues there. Typing seems to be jagged compared to typing in Windows.

Someone else already reported this issue on the forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1352624

I hope that we can hunt down this little irritating bug :)

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.

I can confirm this this is still an issue in Natty, on a brand-new install on a Dell Studio 1535. Also, keys are missed every so often, causing misspellings all over the place.

Very frustrating! I'm happy to post any debug info or logs as required.

Has there been any update on this issue? I'm still experiencing problems after a fresh install of 11.10.

Programming is difficult when your keypresses are ignored every so often :)

Johnny Levai, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-input-evdev REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Christopher,

I'll install the daily-live build on the laptop and use it for a few days to see if the issue can be reproduced.

Installed the latest daily-live image. After using it for 24 hours, I ran into the issue again: seems like the key-up event was not picked up. I had to press another key, since a textbox I was typing in was being filled with the character "K".

Johnyy Levai, thank you for testing Trusty. As per http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/studio-1535, an update to your BIOS is available (A06). If you update to this, does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Thank you for your understanding.
