Bug Description

Binary package hint: lottanzb

Despite trying to chase volume-setting related issues in other bug threads I've still got the same problem where when I log in the volume control is ALWAYS zero (muted) in 9.04 or 9.10. The only way this doesn't happen is to issue a shutdown from cmd-line. Exiting via the GDM GUI seems to always result in a muted sound level on return. I dont see this on every installation of Ubuntu. But on the PC which is being a media-pc and autologin and starts XMBC the volume is always zero. Which is annoying as you have to exit XMBC change the volume and restart XMBC.

Any tips on how to troubleshoot this further and what I can collect would be useful. Short of reinstalling Ubuntu and seeing if that helps I have run out of ideas.

Hi Michael,

Please, if you are still having issues, test with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 522685

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

Please let us know your results.

I'm not having this issue with a fresh 9.10 install on the same machine. I can't collect any more information on this now.
