Binary package hint: thunderbird

I noticed that some of the sentences in this bug report are not in English. If they were translated to English they would be accessible to more triagers.

Using a translator, the message I got is:
When I print my emails from Thunderbird (2.0.0.23) on Ubuntu 9:10 Karmic Koala wants, I just get the message "There is a problem with the processing of the document ...". In other programs (such as OpenOffice, ePDFView) printing is fine.

Have you tried starting Thunderbird in Safe Mode and seeing if you can still reproduce this bug? If not, please do so, as it will help us know how to process this report. You should be able to run Thunderbird in Safe Mode by running 'thunderbird --safe-mode' in the Terminal. Please try this and report back on whether the printing problem still occurs. Thanks in advance!

SambaWare responded to me via email, saying:
Dear Draycen,
Thanks a lot for your interest and fast reply. Right now I've started Thunderbird in Safe Mode, according to your instructions. I've then tried to print a simple e-mail comprising only three lines of text (no hyperlinks and no other objects) but I just got the error message I reported before. By the way, you translation is perfect. I'd like to add that the print preview of the e-mail works fine. I've requested printing and print preview from the “File” menu. May be this problem is related with the fact that direct printing from the Document Viewer (Evince) or from the browser (Mozilla) since Karmic Koala does not function any more, as already reported by many users?

@SambaWare
Thank you for the response. Is there a certain report that you are referring to? Also, you mentioned that printing works fine in other programs; does this include Evince and Firefox?

Thanks Draycen, perhaps these are acceptable examples of such reports: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/513536 and http://<email address hidden>/msg1837731.html . I cannot print directly from Thunderbird, Firefox or Evince, just get the message "There is a problem with processing the document -document name-". With OpenOffice and ePDFViewer it does perfect. Actually I am using the following procedure to get my e-mails from Thunderbird or pages from Firefox on the paper: First I print it as a file (pdf is possible from Firefox, while only ps is possible from Thunderbird). Then I open the file with ePDFViewer and send it to my printer.

Thank you for the update. It seems that there is likley a larger problem causing the bug you are experiencing. Can you please include the information requested at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems as separate attachments? That will help us determine how to process this report, and possibly find other reports similar to yours.

Hello Draycen, as you see I run apport-collected according to the instructions at the web-site you indicated. I'd like to add that running the diagnostics dialog after the print job failed I get the result: "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pips-wrapper failed". Regarding to this I found the follwing instruction by Avasys: http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/faq/id000592.php

Thanks for the extra info. I'm seeing one error in the cups log, but it doesn't provide much information in regards to the cause of the error. I noticed that apport did not accurately say what Thunderbird package you have installed (possibly a problem with the apport hook), so can you please let us know if you have Thunderbird installed from the official Ubuntu repositories?

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Lucid Lynx. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Hi, I was able to reproduce the problem with the live lucid cd. Exact same symptoms.

Thanks
