Create new, in context menu, has no default file types besides 'empty'

When I right click on the desktop (in Nautalis) and select to create a new file, the only file there is an empty file. I have to manually add the usual blank file types to my templates folder, such as blank OpenOffice files. I would like to see the commonly used blank file types, including the OpenOffice file types, added automatically to the templates folder in each user accounts home directory.
