package db appears to be corupt: sudo dpkg --configure -a returns errors and doesn't fix

Bug Description

ok this all started when I tried to run update manager it did a partial upgrade which went wrong now I cannot run synaptic and dpkg returns errors when I use dpkg --configure -a like synaptic says to when it crashes

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. Could you please add the log files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' to this bug report as separate attachments, after trying to update?
