Bug Description

I'm not 100% sure this counts, since it's not a bug per se, but at work I decided to try the Kubuntu desktop since KDE4 has gotten a lot better. Unfortunately everything at work is on a Windows network (including the printer). Under Gnome, when adding a Windows network folder or printer, you are asked for username, password, and workgroup. KDE doesn't ask for the workgroup - to connect to Windows shares (it took me a couple months to figure this out) I had to manually edit the smb.conf file to set the Workgroup. Until I figured this out it made Kubuntu somewhat unusable - I had to reboot into the XP partition every time I needed to print something!

Thanks a lot for reporting this bug, however I am marking this as invalid as it constitutes a feature request which is outwith the definition of a papercut. For more information on what does constitute a papercut, please see here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

I would suggest proposing this at http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com as a feature to be included in future releases of Kubuntu.

AFAICT, this effectively means that the out-of-the-box support for SMB in Kubuntu, isn't out-of-the-box support.

summary: - Kubuntu needs a Workgroup field in the add network folder dialog for
- samba shares
+ WORKGROUP domain entry box not shown in Kubuntu "add network folder"
+ dialog for samba shares

I haven't tried things out to see what the situation is with Kubuntu 10.10 - I was at a job where the network shares, printers, etc were on a Windows server but thankfully I'm now somewhere else in a department running a combination of CentOS and FreeBSD - so I can stick with good ol' SSH. The last time I looked I think the latest version of KDE lets you set specify a smb workgroup somewhere in the system settings, but you still have to know in advance that it needs to be set up prior to trying to connect to a Windows share - if you forget to set the workgroup you won't be asked for it later. (I suppose also if you needed to connect to more than one workgroup, not being able to specify it in the add network folder dialog would be a bit of a pain.)

With an up-to-date KDE it is possible to add a Samba printer using the 'Printer Configuration':
 * Click 'New Printer'
 * Choose 'Windows Printer via SAMBA'
 * Fill in the printer URL (and other details if required).

For me this works to use shared windows printers. Could you confirm this solves your problem as well?

I'm no longer running KDE (turns out I like Unity...) and I don't have a Windows network to deal with any more. But it sounds like this would solve the printer issue. However there would still the issue of accessing the so-called "M: drive".
