Bug Description

Binary package hint: acpid

since upgrading from karmic to lucid, suspend is broken.

By broken I mean that when I hit the keyboard suspend button or use the gnome menu suspend, the screensaver locks but nothing further happens. I can unlock the screensaver and life moves on, but it seems impossible to suspend.

These are the only messages in syslog:

I can however suspend the laptop by doing (as root of course):

 echo 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep

it affects me as well on lucid: hitting the suspend button (key combo, actually) just locks the screen, pm-suspend does nothing.

I also have an aspire one, and for me, suspend appears to almost complete - screen goes black, but backlight and power light remain on.
I can successfully suspend and resume from gdm on the initial boot, but not from the desktop. Also, if I log in and log back out, I can no longer suspend successfully from GDM (screen freezes without going black).

To add to my previous post, I tried the 2 other options listed here:

pm-suspend as root: appears to work fine

echo 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep as root: freezes the computer

Ok, It seems that suspend/resume won't work with an SD card plugged in (at least in the left slot - haven't tried the right)

Removing the SD card, allows suspend and resume to work correctly again!

This bug has gone away for me apparently.

I'm not honestly sure when as I sort of stopped trying to suspend for a while -- I reverted to echoing to /proc/acpi/sleep. However, I tried using the gnome suspend this evening and it suspended as expected. I'll go back to using gnome suspend now and hopefully it'll continue working.

I can confirm this bug on an Acer AspireOne A110L with the latest karmic beta (upgraded today).
As Brent said, the problem disappears when I remove the sd-card before suspending.

Kristian, did you mean lucid beta? If so I also confirm on the Acer Aspire One A110L.

Contrary to Brent's remark in #5, "sudo pm-suspend" also freezes the computer for me.

Can we get some guidance on what information we can provide that would help diagnose and fix this bug?

Can confirm with latest lucid beta; Suspend works from GDM on first try (haven't retried it), it works if SD card is in right slot or disconnected. it will fail if SD card is connected to left slot, both suspend and hibernate seems to be affected. BIOS is 3310 fyi.

Bug #477106 and bug #554695 may be related. In particular, given the relation to the presence of an SD card, I think this might be a duplicate of the latter.

OK, I have found that this was a complete red herring. In 9.10 I had added a routine into /etc/pm/sleep.d to get over the /dev/mmcblk0p1 problem with sd cards. Because I no longer have the mmc card mounted, 'umount' instruction in the suspend section was causing pm-suspend to fail and do an automatic resume. I just commented out the umount /dev/mmcblk0p1 line in the umount_sd script and now suspend works fine..... sorry for any confusion I may have caused. I got the lead from looking at /var/log/pm-suspend.log, in case that helps anyone else.

Gavin McCullagh, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

If reproducible, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend ?

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.3.13-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
