My system froze during the following:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-det dist-upgrade

Attempting to repair after a reboot:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

came up with the error reported here

This sounds similar to the issue reported in bug 99547. Can you comment if the fix and workaround there resolve the issue here? Thanks.

The problem still exists with Lucid Lynx (10.04). I am about to try the instructions in the other bug.

OK, I did a few thing that eventually made the problem go away, based on the information in the referenced bug:

1. Purge the image:
damien@damien-desktop:/boot$ sudo rm *-2.6.31-19-generic

2. Purge the libs
damien@damien-desktop:/lib/modules$ sudo rm -rf 2.6.31-19-generic

3. Purge the dpkg cache
damien@damien-desktop:/var$ sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-*2.6.31-19-generic*

After which point, it seemed to make the problem go away.
