Black screen on iMac with ATI Rage 128 Pro video card

Bug Description

Dapper Drake 6.06: On iMac with ATI Rage 128 Pro video card, once the X server starts, the screen is black. This is true both for Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Using the boot option video=ofonly results in a diagonally garbled CLI.

I tested it with Feisty on my iMac G3/400. As of 4/7/07, the bug is the same as before--black screen only.

Also, none of the workarounds mentioned in various posts in the past fixed the video.
