Bug Description

I have 2 Dell notebooks both running Ubuntu 9.10 from within Windows XP. When I apply the latest kernel update 2.6.31.19 using update manager both notebooks hang on the reboot at a grub prompt. I don't have the exact screen info as I had to restore the OS to send the question.
Any help you can give is very much appreciated
Thank You

John-J,
Please run 'apport-collect -p linux 519030' so that logging for the machine in question can be added to this bug report. We won't be able to do anything on this until we get that information.

Thanks!,

JFo The 2 notebooks are now running Kernel 2.6.31.16-generic as neither
PC will boot up if I apply the update. Do you want me to still run the
command under 2.6.31.16?
Also, I am very new to Linux, so please bear with me when it comes to
questions/answers/command-line entry/etc

John-J,
No problem. :) Running them from the current configuration is fine. I am mainly after machine information and some general logging.

Thanks!

Hi John-J,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 519030

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I was able to install ver. 10.04 on one of the dell pc's with no
apparent problems.
I did notice a couple of things which I attribute to my lack of ubuntu
experience.
The install appeared to be a fresh install and not an update - that is
- it didn't carry any of my 3rd party software forward...Skype in
particular.
I was able to set up my wireless access and browse the Internet,
download some "test" files, but could not attach to any of my win2000
serve shares. I received a DBus error.
I checked for updates to the 10.04 install and found 4 which downloaded
and updated fine.
I had to revert to the working version of ubuntu as none of my email
moved over to the 10.04 version (again an indication of a fresh install)
and I couldn't remember what command you wanted run, but realized it was
IF i had a problem.
I did numerous reboots as that was the issue with the 9.10 and each
performed as it should.
I hope this rather long review helps further the 10.04 development

John

John-J,
I am glad the initially reported issue appears resolved for you. I am going to Fix Release this bug, but if you experience the behavior, you can reset the bug status so that I can begin to focus on it again. All help is appreciated, and your last message does indeed help the development. Thanks for being willing to test some more.

Thanks!
