after restarting everything works normally.
must have been some transient thing.

hmm update. i am getting this bug again.
it occurs with all external harddisks, pen drives, interal harddisks (like my windows partition).

nautilius shows all these drives but gives error in mounting hence cant open them.

one workaround is that always when starting the system if i select the earlier kernel ie 2.6.31-13 i think it always works perfectly and then restart and select the latest kernel ie -14 (maybe it was -12 working and -13 problematic but which ever is latest is problematic) it works the first time. but then if i restart again then it wont work with the latest kernel.
this is why i am now preferinng to boot into earlier kernel itself.

the bug is weird indeed.
pls tell me what other info i can provide.

it seems there might be some similarity with https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/518533.

update so its kernel version -12 with which everything is fine
and -13 where it doesnt work

also another effect of this bug is that wheni boot in -13 and this mounting problem occurs then if i click shut down/restart i get thrown out to the gdm screen where i can select account to login with
and in that screen also if i click shutdown/restart i am still in same screen.

Hi tgpraveen,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 518345

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I am sorry to have set this bug incomplete again - it was incomplete until now (for me) for I suddenly noticed this issue now (for about an hour, exactly). I could mount CDs w/o problems, but no USB sticks.

I tried all the workarounds mentioned here (and elsewhere) but no success. Then I read someone's note "the before-last-update brought me this error and the very last update eliminated it again". So I went to update manager and checked if there is something new (i update about once a week). It showed up a new gdm among the updates (I suppose that was the problem source) and after installing the today-update-package (and rebooting the machine; before reboot it was no change but I assumed the new gdm had to be reloaded so I rebooted) and after the reboot the error is off - I can mount USB again.

So I would set it back to expired but I can not. Please take it off again for it seems to be really expired for it is now OK also on my machine.

Thanks for your patience. I really appreciate from the Linux/Ubuntu community the immense work and the possibility to find solutions for every problem - until now I always found solutions to any problems I had. And sorry again for revitalising this bug unnecessarily.

Best regards,

Nathalie
