icons in workspace switcher

Bug Description

The standard workspace Switcher of Gnome shows 4 workspaces. These workspaces can be populated with several windows. If a window is of fullscreen size the little windows normally even show a icon of the program that is running in that window.

Under some circumstances these icons disappear. For instance if the window size is too small to show the icon.

The problem is that those icons do not come back if they would fit in the window size. This can be seen by dragging the appropriate panel from the top of the screen to the left side. The icons disappear beacause the window size is reduced. If you put the panel back to the top of the screen the icons will not come back.

(This is one way of reproducing the problem. In fact, on my computer those icons disappeared repeatedly without a known reason. So far, the only way of getting them back is to restart the Gnome Desktop.)

Thanks for your bug. gdm is the login manager (where you enter your username and password on boot), you probably wanted to bug gnome-panel, I'm reassigning the bug, let me know if that's wrong.

What panel width do you use? Does maximizing the window does a difference? Is that the same issue than bug #34713 by example?

Dear Sebastien,

thanks for your quick reaction. Absolutely ok that you've reassigned the bug.

I'll try to answer all your questions and give you the result of some more research that I have performed. Perhaps it will be helpful.

1) Panel width: The panel is "expanded" to full screen size which is 1280x1204. The "panel size" is 24 pixels and the orientation is "Bottom".

2) No, maximizing a window doesn't help.

3) I think that bug #34713 is about the same thing, indeed.

Some more research:

I) First experiment:

1) I start with a maximized application "Firefox" (one that opens full screen on my computer).
3) I resize the window a little bit so that the icon still fits into the window on the desktop switcher --> icon stays
2) I resize its window till the icon does not fit inside the window on the desktop switcher --> icon disappears
3) I resize its window till the icon fits inside the window on the desktop switcher --> icon reappears
(this can be done by just dragging the window size. I even do not have to let loose of the mouse button.)

II) Second experiment:

1) I start with a maximized application "Firefox" (one that opens full screen on my computer).
2) I drag and drop the panel with the workspace switcher on it from "Bottom" to "Top" (which is of the same size, of course) --> icon disappears
3) I drag and dropt the panel back to its original position --> icon won't come back
4) I start a new maximized application "Evolution" (one that opens full screen on my computer) on another workspace --> none of the applications shows an icon.

The icons wont't reappear from this point. The only way (so far) is by pressing <CTRL>+<ALT>+<BACKSPACE>

Greetings, André

I just read that there is a workaround for this issue: increasing the panel size from 24 pixel to 26 pixel.

So I started a third experiment:

1) I increased the panel size to 26 pixel.
2) I start an maximized application "Firefox" (one that opens full screen on my computer) --> icon is shown
3) I drag and drop the panel with the workspace switcher on it from "Bottom" to "Top" (the size of the workspace switcher doesn't change, of course) --> icon is still shown
4) I drag and drop the panel with the workspace switcher on it from "Top" to "Left" (which decreases the workspace switcher) --> icon disappears as was expected
5) I drag and drop the panel with the workspace switcher on it from "Left" to "Botton" (original position) --> icon is shown again!

So it seems that this workaround really works. If it doesn't in the long run I will add a comment to this bug.
