Bug Description

Sorry, but am not sure what package usb drivers are part of.

I'm using AMD64
Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10
Kernel: 2.6.31-17-generic

When I plug in an external USB disk or flash drive the system hangs. There are no errors in the logs and the only way to recover is to reboot the system.

One thing I have tried is to boot into recovery mode and when I plug in a drive, the system does continue.

Hi Vlad,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 517070

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I have done some further testing with the following results and a bit more info.

1) When booting from the Karmic Live CD, I cannot recreate the problem
2) When booting Karmic in recovery mode, I cannot recreate the problem
3) The problem seems to only affect mass storage devices as I have a local printer and the mouse connected via USB
4) I cannot execute apport-collect once the system hangs
5) As I use this system for work I'm reluctant to upgrade given the number of problems reported in the forum
6) I have another system with a similar config (ie. Karmic, 64bit) that does not have this problem. I have attached two log files:
a) works.txt: this is from a working system when a mass storage device is plugged in
b) fails.txt: this is from my system that fails. One thing that's obvious is that it does not complete the scan

Please let me know if you need more info.

Given that I have posted a reply recently, why does this bug still marked to expire?

Thanks.

Vlad,
It is an automated thing for the Incomplete status, however, there are 2 possible states when it Expires. Either, there was a response (which you generously provided) and I have not been able to get back to the bug (what happened here), or there was no response and the bug expires.

In this case there was nothing to worry about. :-)

Thanks!

I'm affected by the very same behavior on Lucid (2.6.32-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 28 05:14:15 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux). In most cases, when plugging in an USB massstorage device, the system simply hangs (no log messages, no error, simply dead), occasionally the system does not hang with different symptoms (one or some of):

- dmesg says the device is not ready
- no auto mounting by Gnome
- auto mounting but loosing the device after some seconds
- mount/unmounting of the device in short time spans (30 seconds)

Interestingly, the device is mounted fine and somewhat stable, although the system sometimes still hangs after some time.
