Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. Before we can pass it on to the developers of the patch we need to find out a bit more about the behaviour of this bug.
There is a known issue with applications having and Application Indicator that are launched on log in with the Start-up Manager to use the fall back mechanism instead of the Application Indicator because the indicator-application-service is not ready right away. If that's the bug you're experiencing, please take a look at bug #528088.

It could be that there is a bug in the code of Rhythmbox that is responsible for drawing the tray icon. Could you please attach the file ".xsession-errors" right after the bug occured? You can find this hidden file in your home directory.
Thanks in advance.

I have been having this problem recently. .xsession-errors does not get any entries when I launch Rhythmbox. There is no visual sign of the indicator starting at all. However, I get the crash described in bug #548770 on every single launch, could it be related to this issue?

Bálint: the crash probably has got nothing to do with this issue.
You could try to run Rhythmbox in the command line and run it with the '-d' option in order to enable the debugging mode: 'rhythmbox -d'. Maybe something will be written to the terminal.

This is now happening for me after upgrading to 10.10. This is the first time i have used rhythmbox in 10.10, so i dont know if it happens everytime.

I just reported a bug on Audacity that also is having tray problems. I think the two are related. I dont think this is a bug in rhytmbox itself, but in whatever handles the system tray.
