Do you have ubuntu- restricted- extras installed?. If not then try sudo apt-get install ubuntu- restricted- extras and then try to play the video. If they are already installed and still the video dont play then please tell us what is the file format and encoding of the video file you are trying to play. if possible please provide a sample of the file.
