Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

When using empathy for MSN messaging, some of my outgoing messages end up to the wrong recipient. In example, i'm talking to John Doe and John Doe receives my messages fine, but Richard White receives the messages sent to John Doe as well.

Some people on the contact list report having successfully sent messages to me (on their end), but the messages do not show up on my side.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

This bug report is a bit confusing. Do you still face this? are there any specific steps to reproduce this issue? Can you please try to install the development release of empathy from this ppa https://launchpad.net/~telepathy/+archive/ppa and check how it turns out. This will be really helpful. Thanks in advance

I don't feel this is the correct way to handle this problem. You really need to investigate the code to see what is going on.
I don't trust this application anymore, and have switched back to Pidgin.
What is there to report? You don't know when the problem happens!

Scenario: Someone sends me an IM and I don't receive it.
They don't tell me and assume I just didn't respond.

How do I report something I don't know is occurring? And what would I tell you? Nothing happened when something should have?

I have also had the scenario where I was on the phone with someone, and I send them a message, but all they receive is the: "Mr. Mike: " without any text - does this help?

Check the code carefully for memory leaks, overwritten pointers, or other untrapped function-call failures.
Look at all the people monitoring this issue and reconsider. There's clearly a bug and it needs to be fixed.

Does anyone disagree?

Mike, I think invalid here is a correct status. This does not happen all the time for sure. but when it happens the only thing that user can do is open the debug window from help and select the appropriate telepathy component there and save the logs and post with the bug report. As you dont use empathy anymore there is nothing much we can do.

@nowisnat, If you still face this issue with the latest version of empathy from the ppa or if you are already using Lucid please save the appropriate logs to text file during the time the problem happens using this procedure http://live.gnome.org/Empathy/Debugging and attach it to the bug report. Thanks very much for the bug report.
