Bug Description

Binary package hint: usplash

Hi.

I'm just instaling Ubuntu 9.10 (everything up-to-date as of today) on my girlfriends computer and everything seems to be working, but one thing is leaving her confused: when the splash screen should appear on the system, the (LCD) monitor unsyncs and shows a message that the user should use the recommended resolution of 1024x768 @ 60Hz.

When X is started, everything works fine.

If I remove the splash option from the command line of the kernel, the console is shown and no problems with the monitor occour. The problem happens both with kernels 2.6.31-1{4,8}-generic (this is an i386 machine) and with 2.6.33-020633rc6-generic (downloaded right now).

The computer is a Duron 1.3GHz, with 512MB of memory, with 16MB of memory shared with video. The video card is a SiS 630/730 and the monitor is a SyncMaster 540N. I am using xserver-xorg-video-sis version 1:0.10.1-2.

If any further information is desired, please let me know.

Thanks, Rogério Brito.

As can be seen from the usplash.conf file, the contents there set a resolution of 1024x768 and this is right with the monitor (this is my old monitor, which I used with an intel 865G before, without any problems).

Just as an extra piece of information, I tested to see if usplash would work and which log it would generate (usplash -v -c) and the only line presented was the following:

ioctl(TIOCSCTTY): Operation not permitted
