Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

Empathy uses Vinagre for it's desktop sharing feature, but so far this is only usable over LAN as most internet connections are too slow for VNC. Recently Vinagre gained support for low color depth to improve speed therefor Bug #203782 got fixed in lucid. This "bug" is about Empathy doesn't make use of this much needed feature.

Thank you for taking the time to fill out this bug report. Unfortunately, I am currently not sure how to handle this report. Are you asking that Empathy add a missing feature, or are you reporting that a feature is not working correctly in Empathy?

I am removing "Vinagre" as being affected by this bug since this report applies to Empathy.

I will also be marking this bug "Incomplete" until more information is added.

@draycen: empathy uses vinagre for desktop sharing and vinagre does support low color depths now. so far empathy can't use this feature, but it's not clear where to fix that. maybe in empathy or in vinagre or in both. therefore i set it too confirmed for both, as multiple people already reported it on Bug #203782.

Thank you for the clarification, I did not realize Empathy and Vinagre were related in that way.

@bojo42, Please can you check if this issue is still occurring in latest release of empathy 2.31.90.x included in Ubuntu Maverick? Thanks in advance.

@Kamus: due to Bug #628967 it's currently not possible to check if it is present in maverick. but what upstream changes do make you think that low color support is available in maverick?

this bug have been opened for a while but if you want it to be fixed you have to send it to gnome. we cant keep it opened without any reason so if its an issue please open a bug against empathy in bugzilla and you will know if the bug also needs to be opened against vinagre, setting this bug to incomplete unless someone sends it to gnome.

closing the empathy bug as wontfix since we don't have a reason to keep it opened unless it is sent to the people writing the software.
