Bug Description

I tried to install libfam-dev and this is what I got:

$ sudo apt-get install libfam-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libfam-dev: Depends: libfam0 (= 2.7.0-5ubuntu3)
E: Broken packages

MOTUMergers: maybe this can be fixed with the outstanding merge? (#4574)

Oh sorry, the merge was already done.

Didier, what happens on sudo apt-get install -s libfam0 ? Does it want to remove half the world? If so, that's because it wants to replace libgamin0 with libfam0 (which are binary compatible).

If that's the case and you just want to have "some kind of FAM", I'd say, we close the bug and you stick with gamin.

Sorry for the huge delay :-/ I didn't get any mail since the one setting the bug to rejected status.

Btw, Daniel, yes "sudo apt-get install -s libfam0" wants to remove half the world.

I don't really need a fix, but it's more or less a QA question.

I'm reopening this. I don't personally need a fix, but it looks like a legit bug that's probably worth fixing.

To clarify the "legit bug" thing, I got here because of a problem reported on irc where an app required libfam, installation of which causes problems with no indication that libgamin would suffice.

I have the same problem and:
sudo apt-get install libfam
wants to remove the whole world too.
I need this package for the compilation of amarok on kubuntu dapper.

Sorush, libgamin provides libfam. Install that, and you should be able to build amarok. This appears to be a packaging/dependency/provides issue.

Rocco, i'll try the libgamin install. I hope that it works as doodled - doodle's daemon - won't install without fam and, as noted, libfam0 would like to remove the whole of ubuntu-gnome ...
Is it possible to cheat by unpacking libfam and just inserting it's library files into the lib dir by hand?
cheers, peter

When you install libgamin, the libfam dependency will be satisfied. You'll be all set.

Looks like it's going well now.
