cannot connect either by clicking on ubuntu one applet, or via the "connect" button in the Ubuntu One folder. Consequently my computer doesn't sync

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Sorry you are having problems with Ubuntu One. This particular bug has already been reported and is a duplicate of bug 488413, so it is being marked as such. The fix for this bug has been released. The easiiest way to get that is described here.
