Bug Description

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

I have a Dell mini 9 with preloaded Ubuntu Heron 8.04 linked to HP P10005 via usb cable. Printer installed with correct driver, but printout does not appear although the print job is indicated as complete. Same problem with printing to pdf (no matter what application I use). I seem to be able to print to a networked Xerox Phaser colour printer. Dell support useless - no response at all and left hanging on telephone line to no avail. Log shown below. I am not a 'techie' so full guidance needed please on any solution. Someone has suggested upgrading to v9.10 of Ubuntu.

Happens with Ubuntu 11.04. On my eeepc, once the printer was detected, a pop-up warns about some proprietary plugin that needs to be installed, and after the plugin installation, everything is working fine.
But on another PC, where the printer was installed prior to the dist upgrade, HP P1005 is detected, print jobs are sent to the queue, bu when the job is cleared, nothing is printed.
I tried installing some optionnal hp* packages, and then I printed 1 test page and 1 web page. I seemed magical. Then I tried the 2nd "print test page button" in the printer settings (the one that is tooltiped "show ink/tonner level etc.") : the printer didn't react. And the bug was here again.

I'll try a fresh new Natty install later just in case the bugs is showing on upgraded PC only.

I found a way (workaround) how to make HP LaserJet P10xx work with Ubuntu in bug #289410 :
Simply run this command in terminal (and press Enter key several times):
sudo hp-setup -i

See bug #783389 if you have the problem with Natty. A fix is available. You need to install all updates. On a fresh Natty install update before connecting the printer for the first time. If the printer is already connected, update and then run

hp-plugin -i

once to clean the mess of the bug which is fixed with the update.

Changed in system-config-printer (Ubuntu):
