Erratic sound support with SBx00 Azalia(IDT 92HD88B1, 103c:1475)

There are sound issues with computers that have ATI chipsets.
Several brands of computers are affected, including the HP 625 which is sold as a Linux laptop.
Issues include: internal laptop speakers do not work, or one speaker works. Jack sense does not work.

There are issues with sound support with the following ATI audio chipsets,

From old bug description: HP dv4 2049us Audio is very erratic. Speaker works but then the headphones out don't. Headphones work but then the speaker won't work after the headphones are removed from the jack. Playing with the various audio preferences does more or less nothing other than breaks it at times. I'm only using 10.04 because audio on this machine doesn't work at all in 9.10, and 9.04 won't even install. Please ask for more information, and i will try to supply it as I'm giving this machine to my son who is a music major, and I'd hate to see him forced onto Windows 7.

I have a very similar problem on an HP g62 with 10.04 x86_64. Same Radeon HD 4200 sound device too. It appears that Intel's HDA driver gets loaded for it.

This is still a problem in Maverick. I'm unable to get sound from the mic in the internal webcam or an external mic on the mic jack.

I have the same problem with an Acer Aspire 5542 and Ubuntu 10.10 and Gnome
Using 10.4 I was able to talk into microphone, now I cannot have in work.
I tried using Alsamixer but when the microphone seems to be active (I can hear my voice out of speakers), Audacity or recorder give no signal.
The main problem seems to be that its behavior is absolutely erratic (suddenly it worked for some seconds in Audacity, then opening skype, it stopped).
lshw -c sound gives exactly the same result as the last post

When I connect headphones, internal speakers won't mute. The headphones works when I restart ubuntu. But when I disconnect headphones, no sound out from internal speakers.
I hope ubuntu Audio Team solve this issue as soon as possible.

amixer: Invalid command!

I'm not sure why amixer considers that command to be invalid. Perhaps the control does not support capture mode. (Why not?)

In alsamixer, pressing spacebar on the control does nothing. It is also worth noting that alsamixer considers all the *Mic devices to be outputs as well as inputs. A little odd.

I have the same hardware on my laptop, with Ubuntu 10.10 installed.
Weeks before I could not make my mic working, but the speaker and headphone work well.
And I had no luck with the latest alsa in the PPA.

Once I thought this should be a bug in pulseaudio, because I found I can record through the command arecord
But the problem still existed after upgrading pulseaudio...After that even arecord could not work (maybe because of some packages upgraded during that period, probably kernel image)

Recently I built the 2.6.38 kernel for other reasons, I found my mic magically works! There seems still some problem with speaker/headphone auto switching, but at least this van be controlled in the 'sound preferrence' from the panel applet.

I would like to provide more info if needed.

Installed Natty Narwhal unity/netbook version onto my asus 1215t netbook. Sound worked great, played music and everything until I realized my microphone wasn't working, and I tried messing around with sound preferences in pulseaudio. Nows my speakers are broken to shit and they sound like a rats punching my speakers. I would greatly appreicate a solution..

It worked well on Ubuntu 11.04 but internal speakers stopped working after uppgrading to 11.10 while
head phone output works if RS880 (Radeon HD 4200) HDMI is disabled.

@Richard Ayotte: you have a different codec (VIA VT2020) than the one in this bug report (IDT 92HD88..)

Lots of jack sensing issues for VIA codecs were fixed in ALSA 1.0.25, so try using the latest alsa kernel module:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install alsa-hda-dkms

If the jack sensing does not work on the next boot, please file a new bug report.

Joe_Linux, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.
