By opening the attached error.srt subtitle file, I receive the same "Failed to open the subtitle file." error message.
My operating system is Windows-7 64 bit, running Java version 6 Update 18 installed (build 1.6.0_18-b07).
I tried to run both the latest and the 2.1 version of Subtitle Translator.

Hi Bob and nagylacy,

The Bob subtitle is not well format, by the wikipedia... "Subtitles are indexed numerically, starting at 1." and in your subtitle file the last speach jumps from 920 to 9999 and the time back to 00:00. I delete the last speach and the program open witout problens.

"9999

00:00:0,500 --> 00:00:2,00

<font color="#ffff00" size=14>www.tvsubtitles.net</font>"

And about the nagylacy subtitle the are just errors, one is in the last speach that jumps from 835 to 999 and resets the time to 00:00. The other error is in the first speach, before the "1" there was some non visible character, and dont now why. I delete the last speach and this strange character before the "1" on the first speach and the program works ok.

"1

00:00:04,626 --> 00:00:08,736

The surgical scalpel is made

of sterilized, carbonized"

"999

00:00:0,500 --> 00:00:2,00

www.tvsubtitles.net"

I'll try make a better error detection in subtitles in the next version of this program. Thanks for the help:)

Open you subtitle with "Subtitle Workshop" and "Save as..." and select "Subrip". Then try to open it in "Open subtitle translator".

I ran into the same trouble, I was trying to open a Portuguese file in UTF-8 codification.
Then I used NotePad++ to convert it from

"UTF-8" to "UTF-8 without BOM",

after doing this, everything worked well.
