nagios install with nagios-text gives config errors

Binary package hint: nagios-text
Steps to reproduce:
on a system with apache2 up and running,
$ sudo aptitude install nagios-common nagios-text
Watch the following two errors scroll by:
Error: Service check command 'check_ping' specified in service 'PING' for host 'gw' not defined anywhere!
Checked 1 services.
Checking hosts...
Error: Host check command 'check-host-alive' specified for host 'gw' is not defined anywhere!
Checked 1 hosts.
figuring that this might be because I need nagios-
(Reading database ... 132935 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking nagios-
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/
trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/
