I've noticed the same problem. Alongside the crash when I close the add widgets dialog, pressing the right arrow in the add widgets dialog will result in no widgets being shown in the dialog and naturally, it will crash when you close the dialog. As well, if you do manage to add a widget to either the panel or the desktop, nine times out of ten, plasma-desktop will crash soon after and the widgets you added to the panel or the desktop will disappear.

Fix released to Kubuntu 10.04. It will also be available with the KDE 4.4.0 packages for 9.10.
