Bug Description

Binary package hint: language-selector

I'm running the lastest Kubuntu Lucid Alpha 2.

When i clicked "Install New Langugage" in the system-settings, a dialoge poped up and asked me whether to install the missing part of the language support. After press OK button, apport showed up and told me that "Install Package" had crashed, but it still downloaded some packages anyway.

After the installation finished, I re-login my account to apply changes. But it turned out that only ibus input method was installed. The whole KDE was still English. Also I couldn't find Simplified Chinese in "Add language" menu. When clicking "Install New language" again, a dialoge poped up asking me whether to install the missing part of the language support like the first time I click this button, and nothing else happened besides the apport crash report.

I can't report this bug through apport, because it keeps asking me to upgrade some of my packages which is blocked by Kpackagekit. And running "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" will remove 167 KDE packages which I'm not sure whether it is correct.

I have tested this with the latest daily Kubuntu Lucid Desktop Live CD and cannot reproduce this bug. Can you please try again with all updates installed and let me know if this crash still happens?

Thanks a lot.

In 22nd March's Ubuntu LiveCD the problem doesn't existed anymore, but not sure whether Ubuntu and Kubuntu share the same backend of language selector.

They don't use the same code, but similar code.

Marking as Fix Released. Thanks!

Hi, Sorry for responding so late.

I don't think this problem is solved, and i think it's getting even worse.

I installed Kubuntu Lucid Beta in Virtualbox and upgraded system. After that, i couldn't install the Simplified Chinese language support.

Clicking Select language from Langugage & Region section in System Setting, I was told that language support was not fully installed as normal. So I pressed "Install", but an error dialoge pop up and showed some unreadable characters. I I copied those texts to Kate and save them to a file, then I reopened the file with UTF-8 encoding and found out they were just Chinese characters with wrong encode.

The error message told me that there are some conflicts between packages and was not able to satisfied, so language selector refused to install the language support packages.

@Jimhu:
1. your issue with characters not getting displayed because of the wrong encoding being used is really a totally separate issue and probably not even related to language-slector. Please file a new bug for this and attach some screenshots.

2. The actual message is also nothing language-selector can do about... if there are some conflicting packages, it would help to have the exact message in order to determine which packages are involved.

Can you please test with a clean installation of beta2 with all updates installed since then?
Thanks a lot.

@Arne:
1.You are right. That wrong decoding problem is caused by install-package and is not related to language-selector. I'd already reported a bug of it, but no one took care of it. Please check out bug #468615.

2.It seems that installing Chinese language packages works great, so i think this bug has been solved.
