Bug Description

Binary package hint: bug-buddy

When I launch bug-buddy from the menu, it opens https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+filebug but when launching it from the terminal, it opens normally.

I can confirm this. In the .desktop file, I see the following:

Exec=gnome-open https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+filebug

IMVHO, this is not expected. People that want to file a bug can visit the site on their own. People who want to use bug-buddy to assist them through the process should be able to launch it from the menu. After all, it isn't even "bug buddy" if it doesn't invoke bug buddy and invokes a link.

Two entries can be inserted in the menu. A "Report a bug" entry (which existed under Help during the development stages of Dapper IIRC) which will open the Launchpad website and a "Bug Buddy" entry that will actually invoke bug-buddy.

The problem is that bug-buddy doesn't work with out of the box ubuntu as there's no smtp server installed and it doesn't work with Launchpad so it can't be used to file a bug anyway.

There is a bug-buddy-like launchpad tool being developed I think, also people may have been waiting until after bug-buddy had it's new xml-rpc interface before evaluating using it for launchpad.

This probably needs further discussion by bringing it up on a mailing list (ubuntu-desktop or sounder are probably your best bets) or by creating a spec (you should first check whether it already exists) at the Ubuntu specs
page (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+specs) in Launchpad.You can start writing a spec following the steps described in http://wiki.ubuntu.com//FeatureSpecifications

Thanks for your bug. That's not a bug but a feature. Note that the menu item is masked by default and that the situation might change with edgy since bug-buddy does communicate by xmlrpc now
