Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

after having scrolled up manually, the conversation window in a chat fails to get back to ordinary focus, in which it would then follow the actual conversations messages with the scrolling..
instead, the scrollbar keeps the conversation window focus on the messages manually viewed, and the focus rests there, regardless of any new messages being sent or coming in..

very annoying bug!!

@frederik.nnaji I have a few questions. if you scroll it manually then why would you want it to come back to its position automatically? I tried this in pidgin and it also seem to have the same case.

It would be great if any usablity expert throw some light on this one.

I think what OP is saying is something along the lines of the following use case:
1) Joe wants to see a message that was previously said in convo. Joe scrolls up to view message
2) After reading message, Joe scrolls back down
3) Joe expects, from then on, empathy will continue operation as if no scrolling took place. i.e. when a new message is received it will automatically scroll down.

the problem is currently (on my empathy, have not tried trunk), is that at 3, the window no longer scrolls with new im's.

thank you abhishek!
due to configuration of my mailbox filters i failed to catch up with a few
messages here..
sorry Omer, i was quasi "away" for a while.

the above description is precise and describes my experience in ubuntu
karmic.

i am now testing the current lucid packages and am not experiencing issiues
of the sort.
yet the timestamp issue in the ubuntu theme remains..
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/543537

anyhow, as far as i can see there is no such problem in empathy on lucids
social desktop.

Empathy 2.28.1.1 on Ubuntu 9.10
The status Fix release means what: a.) it is available in the back-port repo. for version 9.10, or b.) it won't be ported on 9.10 but only on 10.04? Thanks for a word of explanation.

lucid fixes this.
i wouldn't know about backports for it though, since my machines are
now all on lucid beta..

i would recommend adding a pause button though:
when i scroll back to read an earlier part of the conversation,
incoming messages always make the window focus jump away from what i'm
trying to read, back to the newest messages.
to prevent that from happening, one could use the pause button to
inhibit refreshing the conversation window in the foreground, while
continues buffering the new incoming messages invisibly, until i
scroll back to the newest messages by hand, or alternatively hit
"play" again.
identi.ca has such a button, that's where i noticed it first.

hello,

it´s a bug comes from directly from gtalk i think. the windows gtalk is
also te same it looks on my wifeś pc.
on the pidgin i don´t have a problem with it. but i don´t understand why
they put empathy as standard chat program?

pidgin look also like alternative i think , but functionality is good.
but empathy is to simply. but with pidgin is a bug with me..
i don´t know if it on my pc is.., pidgin quit´s sometime, so i must
restart..., but if i got wishes to put something new in empathy than
rater a Packet like system.
do you know packet? works in the early dayś on ham radio with ax25
protocol..., but know give a new life in the internet...
make a irc node free as a virtual channel, en than you have no other
server needed..., everyone can chat open with each other,,,

it´s my dream,... i like that, but he problem i watch with the new
version of empathy..., i don´t like 4 chat programs..... but i must see
now how i put facebook in empathy, with pidgin works..,
empathy is good on gtalk not.., i think they take program code of de
orginaly gtalk..

gtreetings ringo

lucid fixes this.

AFAIK this has neither anything to do with jabber, nor with google talk.
empathy offers more consistency, since it is being developed upstream,
that's why empathy is now the native IM software for Ubuntu. There is
a lot of work being done to empathy, please check out Ubuntu 10.04 as
it arrives in a few days.

i like the vision you are drawing up! freedom is the most important
feature in what free software stands for, please never forget this
idea and expand it before the right people in an organized way.

facebook is integrated well into empathy, no plugins needed.
please get Ubuntu 10.04 in 3 days from now, if you are ok with such a big step!
i can only recommend it.
