Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal ( Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal ) :

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid.

If it happens frequently you should run the "Memory check" from the boot menu. If that runs successfully, please start the rescue system in the boot menu and select the "File system check" option in the next menu

Thanks in advance!

That took a while to fix! After first having to run fsck because / wouldn't mount because of a few dozen lost inodes..

Anyways, clearly the cache got it all fixed (as usual).

What manner of debugging would be needed to discover why the entire computer is crashing when I run 'Update Manager'?

memory check passes. I ran it for over a 1/2 hour.
