export to mp3 support missing (libmp3lame.so)

Bug Description

when sellecting the 'export to mp3' option for an open sound file, audacity says it cannot find the shared library 'libmp3lame.so', and asks the user to locate it. Which is not possible because a file with this exact name doesn't exist.

I was able solve this problem by installing the liblame0 package, also from universe, and point audacity to this file:
/usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0

seems to me like this is the most appropriate team to assign this audacity bug to, or possibly the Desktop Team, or possibly the MOTU media team. :-)

Hi Rui,

Strictly speaking, I don't think this is a bug. The reason is that audacity works without mp3 export. There are people who won't want to install the mp3 encoding libraries but still use audacity.

If you don't object, I think I will close this bug.

Alex

Hi,

My point wasn't wether the user would or not want to install mp3 support. It's the fact that even when the user does install mp3 support, he/she has to point audacity to a shared object which does not have the same filename (or indeed, the same file extension) requested by the program, and so that file is filtered from the file selection dialogue.

Don't know if this can be considered a bug, but maybe it can be considered a problem with the ubuntu compile of audacity, since it doesn't look for a support file where that file is located on a ubuntu system.

Sorry, I misunderstood you Rui. I can confirm that this situation occurs on edgy with version audacity_1.2.4b-2.1ubuntu1_i386. I think this can be classified as a bug.

Unfortunately, license constraints prevent direct linking of the lame libraries with audacity. Version 1.3.2-3 includes an adjustment to improve the search for libmp3lame, which makes the manual configuration of mp3 support fairly simple for those with lame installed.

If you install the package "lame", then it automatically works with Audacity. I think, instead of directing the user to some website, it should just ask if you want to install the required package and do so.

As a quick, temporary fix, the button which now directs you to a webpage, should just change the url to apt://lame.

@Jo-Erlend: That's a really good idea for an enhancement, but it deserves it's own bug report. Version 1.2.4b-2.1ubuntu1 wouldn't automatically work if users installed lame, and this bug tracks fixing that problem. Enhancing the way that Audacity instructs the user to install lame is something else. Note that it would have to go to some (potentially local) page that explained the licensing constraints and offered the user the chance to install, rather than just installing.
