Thanks Alex,

Its a similar problem, (resolv.conf no longer a symlink) but I think its related to running the openvpn manager and bailing out half way through a vpn setup.

Apologies I dont have anything more conclusive, but I do recall it breaking resolv.conf and thus DNS which I manually fixed.

solution to get me going was to;

$ sudo rm /etc/resolv.conf
$ sudo ln -s /etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf
$ sudo apt-get -f install

problem goes away.
