Bug Description

Binary package hint: kvirc

In the Official Ubuntu Karmic Koala repository there is an old and unstable version of kvirc (4.0.0~svn3240). It often crashes.
I've compiled (for arch i386/amd64/all) the latest version (4.0.0~svn3831) of kvirc from svn repository.
This version is more stable and complete.

Note: Links to the packages removed since they are not legally distributed.

All these packages can be inserted into Ufficila repository for Ubuntu Karmic Koala? What can I do to make this possible?
I've also created a script to downloading from svn repository, compiling, packaging latest kvirc version.

Please don't understand me wrong, but WHAT DID YOU DO to KVIrc?

You'll find working halfofficial packages on http://www.rzuser.uni-heidelberg.de/~xt1/ubuntu/index.html

In http://www.rzuser.uni-heidelberg.de/~xt1/ubuntu/kvirc_4.0.0~svn3824+rc2-1.tar.gz you'll find a debian dir, which is mainly the original debian dir from r3240 with some updates from http://hg.debian.org/hg/pkg-kde/kde-extras/kvirc/ and a little adjustment for ubuntu, like dependency to x11proto-scrnsaver-dev and libcrypto++8 (for which you need universe).

All you have to change to building newer packages is debian/changelog and debian/rules (for version number).
You HAVE to put your name in debian/changelog, so everyone is able to track who mad which changes.

This bug is tagged needs-packaging which identifies it as a request for a new package in Ubuntu. As a part of the managing needs-packaging bug reports specification, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Specs/NeedsPackagingBugs, all needs-packaging bug reports have Wishlist importance. Subsequently, I'm setting this bug's status to Wishlist.

Changed in kvirc (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Wishlist

The real problem is that KVIrc default script is broken in karmic, I don't know why.

So it is a bug and not only a wish to have a newer version

Before to create deb files i've modified this files with my name, email, etc:
/usr/share/doc/kvirc-data/copyright
/usr/share/doc/kvirc-data/changelog.Debian.gz
I don't know of you are refferring to this files.
I've created deb files with EPM and i've specified all dependencies.
I've never proposed a package for inclusion in the repository. I don't know if this is the correct procedure.
I would be grateful if you could explain to me what is the correct procedure.

Also I use the svn version of kvirc 4.0.0svn3831 on Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 Koala
but I have not encountered any major problem so far. I do not know if it's just a coincidence.

Dear Alessandro Lanave,
we, the Debian maintainers of KVIrc, hereby request the immediate takedown of
your binary packages from [0].

We do this for several reasons:
1. You've deleted any reference to our (and others) copyright on the packaging.
This is a plain copyright infringement.
2. You don't provide the source for your binary packages, which is an
   violation of the GPL.

There are a few secondary reasons, why we're not too happy with your packages
in a request for packaging on Launchpad, which might lead to the situation that
your packages become the next official Ubuntu packages.
A preliminary examination showed the following:
1. You're offering a kvirc-data binary package for amd64 and i386, which is
inexplicable, as kvirc-data is an Arch: all package.
2. You didn't provide a proper changelog entry for the changes made by you. It
seems like you've just replaced the first line of the topmost entry, which
was an entry for the 4:4.0.0~svn3240-1 package.
We haven't checked further, so there are probably other quality issues.

You're free to provide new packages, which comply with the GPL and the
copyright law. We'd encourage you, to use our latest package as a basis and/or
check if the latest packages provided by Debian aren't suffcient for you.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Kind regards,
Raúl Sánchez Siles and Kai Wasserbäch
Debian Maintainers of KVIrc

Currently, we get kvirc unmodified from Debian. If there are issues in the package, the best way to solve it is in cooperation with the Debian maintainers. I hope it goes without saying, but potential sponsors, please don't upload anything based on these packages.

Sorry for the problem. I have removed binary packages. I don't want to make a copyright infringement. I want only to learn to create sources and bynary packages legally and correctly. I request only your help.
So can you give me an example on how to change correctly the original files Changelog and Copyright ?
If i've only compiled kvirc from source and i've not made any changes what i've to add to changelog ?
Excuse my ignorance but why i can not propose a package for a generic architecture (all) ?

If you would like to get involved with Ubuntu development, there are quite a
number of resources available to find out how. A good starting place is:

Hello,

the version in karmic is still broken (because nothing changed) and lucid has now the debian package(kvirc kvirc-data and kvirc-dgb), but it shouldn't have an old kvirc-dev package
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/kvirc-dev

thanks for the lucid update

It doesn't. That's from the old version and is no longer built by the
current package. It will be removed, but this takes manual processing and
is not immediate.

Fix Released? The package in karmic is still broken because it was never changed/repaired and the package in lucid is outdated. KVIrc has RC3 with rev 4262 and many bugfixes by this time. Even debian has 4 newer versions in SID than ubuntu lucid.
