I was updating this package through update-manager and it hung after saying that the group vsftpd already existed, so it was doing nothing. I waited about 10 minutes and nothing further happened, so I had to ctrl-c to kill it.

If it helps, this happened again when vsftp tried to upgrade, and I found that if I kill the vsftpd process as Update Manager is hanging on its update, Update Manager continues its work. Maybe there's a deadlock or something?

The same here too.Lucid i386 vbox.
Only when I killed the process I could continue with the update.The server though works just fine.
