We have one bug for slowness in update-grub upstream in Debian
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=508834
I'm just not sure if I should mark that one directly as *the* upstream bug for that.

On my laptop the grub-probe is instantaneous

The issue seems to be fixed on my laptop now.
