Bug Description

Binary package hint: xfce4

Since Lucid has SLiM Display manager in its repos, Xubuntu should use it instead of depending on a GNOME program like GDM.

Thanks for your bug report.

FYI, I've experienced some weird issues with slim, such as xfdesktop not using the same $XDG_USER_DIR as other components.

This needs to be discussed on our development mailing list (<email address hidden>) before doing anything anyway.

affects: xfce4 (Ubuntu) → xubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)

Discuss away then, I won't participate in it. I find mailing-lists rude most of the time.

I just used SLiM from here in Karmic: https://launchpad.net/~stemp/+archive/xfce/+packages

And it works quite well actually. I see no problems with using it in Lucid if it works here in Karmic.

coldReactive,

we sure will discuss it and have discussed it before as well. To be honest, I don't see your attitude being very creative.

Including a package as default for a release (especially LTS) needs more than being in the archive and working (quite) well for limited amount of people. Even transition from to an another release might make a difference, so having been testing it in Karmic doesn't really mean anything. Also, even if something depended partly on GNOME doesn't mean it's the worst alternative.

We won't be including SLiM in Lucid for the reasons mentioned earlier plus the fact that it we are already quite late in the release schedule (past a few Alpha's).

If you want to make sure SLiM is included in Lucid+1, I'm sorry to say but you might need to use a mailing list.

Yeah, ESPECIALLY when I can't get a deb, make a deb myself (giftwrap or alien from RPM) of ayttm 0.6.1 when the current 0.5.0 karmic ayttm has severe issues... and going on their mailing list got me no where within 5 emails... yeah, I really want to subscribe on another mailing list.

Sorry, but no.

Lionel, Pasi, please excuse the rudeness of certain bug-reporters here who do not appreciate the hard work that you do.

Now that the gdm-2.20 package is history, xubuntu-desktop requires the installation of gdm, which pulls in libbonobo and a boatload of other GNOME dependencies that I'd rather do without.

SLiM looks interesting (I just found out about it---yay for more options), but what I'd really like is to have the gdm dependency changed to "gdm | x-display-manager" to allow a much-needed bit of flexibility.

Should I file a new bug report for this? Against ubuntu-meta and/or xubuntu-meta?

Please do file a new bug report for the requested wishlist item. Thanks for helping improve Xubuntu.

Please do not apologize for me. If you cannot offer a friendly environment for users who want to change something, but have no coding experience, patch experience, or experience on the workings of any type of structure, API, etc... you should give them the opportunity anyway to weigh in.

if you don't, well, you can just sit on your developer high horse and fuck it. I'm sorry for the rude language, but it's the truth, I can't get anywhere on the mailing lists.

@Charlie: Thanks for the note; I've just filed bug #552858.

@coldReactive: Some day, you're going to learn that the worst response anyone can give you is no response at all.

Not sure we will switch to slim. More likely to lxdm, or even more to lightdm, when it's ready.

I wasn't aware of Lightdm; it looks pretty promising. I've filed a few comments on the handful of wishlist items it has here on LP.

Lxdm does seem to me like the only other option that's actively being maintained... which is disappointing, because it's shoddy code and has a number of significant bugs open. I'd speak in favor of SLiM, if it didn't have some major issues of its own :-(

If lightdm is ready, we'll switch to it in natty (I think lubuntu will do the same). Otherwise, we'll keep gdm for one more cycle, and won't switch to slim.
