Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

When upgrading from Breezy to Dapper there is this step where it says that in the next step some packages will be removed if you do not have universe enabled. I think it would be useful to have the option to remove these packages even if you have universe enabled as they seem mostly useless to the normal user/deprecated by newer versions or other software.

Thanks for your bugreport.

This sounds like a useful feature and I hope to get it done for edgy.

This bug is targeted for edgy but has seen no activity for a while. If it hasn't been done yet, it is far too late to add this for edgy, and the milestone should be cleared. If it has been done, the bug should be closed.

I just did an upgrade from Breezy to Dapper, and the update-manager showed me a list of items from universe that are no longer supported and it removed them for me. However, I DO have universe enabled, so maybe this is not exactly the same?

I just did a dapper->edgy upgrade, and I got a list of obsolete packages, and was told that they were 'proposed for removal' in the next step. However, after this dialog u-m finished, there was no next step.

I believe this feature is implemented since at least Ubuntu 8.04.
Can this bug be closed?

Marking this as Fix Released as distupgrade now handles obsolete and not supported packages, gives the option to remove them.
