Bug Description

If CD/DVD media are inserted into the drive (MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846), they are not detected (not shown on desktop, rythmbox etc.), although the drive is detected on dmesg and palimpsest disk utility. Autodetection works fine on Jaunty and Debian lenny, so it is no hardware issue. devkit-disks --monitor shows NOTHING during disk insertion, there is also NO entry in kernel log (like "Jan 8 10:30:06 ubuntu kernel: [ 975.303777] ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A" on an i386 machine).
I'm not the only one affected (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1323153), so I decided to file this bug.
Thanks for any advice.

I get the purpose of these posts, but unfortunately I'm not so keen on applying an attachment/patch.

All I can say is that my 12" PPC G4 is unable to mount any DVD/CDs regardless of the manufacturer or volume. Never had 9.04 on this PPC so i'm unfamiliar with how the optical drive worked on that, but on Karmic it is a pain to work around on and I see this same situation on many forums. Would love to get this resolved and begin to use Brasero and VLC to begin burning and watching my DVDs as well as CDs.

I will say that the application "Sysinfo" under the "Storage" tab does read and recognize the volume on my optical drive so I'm sure there is some light at the end of this tunnel. If anyone can assist me on providing more information such as what kallewirsch has done I will be more than glas to provide such info to this post.

No luck with kernel package, so trying again with devicekit assinged...
@Eddie: I used Apport to collect data, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

affects: linux (Ubuntu) → devicekit (Ubuntu)

FYI I'm a relative newbie having just converted our ppc to 9.10. I'm having exactly the same problem with exactly the same hardware. I had exactly the same problem with installing Xubuntu 9.10 earlier on the same machine. Sure any output would be redundant...

Thanks, G.

This problem disappeared on my G4 PPC iMac when I installed Kubuntu, and set KDE as my default window manager. Under KDE CDs and DVDs mount as they should in multimedia applications and they show in the file browser. However if I switch back to Gnome or Xfce the problem remains.

Cheers

Thanks Conal,
Kubuntu recognizes and acceses removable media without problems on my powerbook, too.
I therefore changed the package to gnome-mount (may have no effect eithter ...).
The only way gnome recognizes dv/cds seeems to restart with the medium in tray.
Cheers, Stefan
p.s.: The problem remains the same with Lucid. If I'm smart enough, I'll assign it.

affects: devicekit (Ubuntu) → gnome-mount (Ubuntu)
