Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

When booting with USB devices, it stops with the message 'unable to enumerate USB device on port X', X being sometimes 1 and sometimes 2. It is followed by the message 'buffer I/O error, dev sr1, sector XXXXXX' repeated for differing sectors.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete is the only way out. Recovery mode returns to a login.

I detached all my USB devices and was then able to boot. I suspect it's my cooling pad which has 4 unused USB ports, allegedly USB 2, but I suspect they're really USB 1.

This has been an issue on Lucid only, starting today with all updates as of 09:45 EST in Canada.

Through several reboots I have narrowed the problem device to be my PCIMIA TrendNet Model TU2-H4PC 4 port USB root hub. With the same USB devices plugged into a different root hub, Lucid boots normally.

It may possibly be responsible for the spontaneous shutting down/logging out that occurs periodically in Lucid.

I do not have a problem of any kind with this device in Karmic or previous versions,

Datasheet. I also downloaded the driver, if anyone wants to look at it.

It seems that this bug has been filed for the wrong package. As far as I can see it is unrelated to xorg. The USB driver is part of the linux kernel, so I'm refiling there. Linux has a lot of open bugs, so it may be a good idea to check if the problem still persists in the Mainline kernels [1] and if it does, file it in the upstream bug tracker (see bottom of [2]).

I thought I had been clear that it is my PC card that is affected. The USB devices that were attached to it have been moved to another root hub and are not affecting the boot or resumption from suspend.

The PC card always affects the boot and resumption from suspend, even when no USB devices are attached. If it's not Xorg, then what else could be causing the problem?

It seems that it was another upstart problem. I installed bum and fixed both my CUPS problem and later this problem by enabling CUPS and PCI to boot at startup.

There are a number of other items - udev comes to mind - that aren't launching on boot up. Should they be?

I am closing this bug in favour of a new one, as I have deduced the problem lies with pcmciautils.
