This problem was caused by the failure of the xserver-xorg-core package to remove an alternative which had been installed by the previous release of the same package.

This is fixed in version 1.7.3.902-1ubuntu5.dsc.

Credit goes to Steve Langasek for spotting the cause of the problem

NOTE: if you want a quick fix you can simply reinstall xserver-xorg-core with the following command and reboot:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core

The update worked. I had to re-enable Visual effects and restore my compiz settings.

I still can't get some Compiz things to work, e.g., Raise on Rotate, and I still had to create symlinks in /usr/lib (particularly for libGLU to point to the ones in mesa/). And, yes, I am up to date, including the above referenced xserver-xorg-core.

Install mesa-utils to make that go away.

This is also true for me!
I've installed nvidia-current and nvidia-current-modialiases and resinstall xserver-xorg-core but there is an error if I launch glxinfo :

 > Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

So Compiz, Cairo-Dock with OpenGL, Blender or other tools which use GLX doesn't work.

If I install nvidia-glx-195, nvidia-195-kernel-source and nvidia-195-modaliases (which were on nvidia vdpau ppa) the output of glxinfo is now correct until I reboot my computer. But after the reboot, Xorg crashes and I've to remove these beta Nvidia drivers (195). I know that this package has to be updated (bug #494166 ) but this is the only solution I find if I want to use newest drivers from deb packages. I don't have tested older drivers from repositories like the 185 yet. (these drivers has not as well adapted to my graphic chipset but I can test if you want).

BTW, thanks Alberto for your great work on GNU/Linux and particularly on Ubuntu ;)

@Mathieu:
Those packages were removed on purpose, as they break the new alternatives system.
