Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-23-386

Mainboard: ASRock K7S8X

lspci returns:
0000:00:03.0 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f)
0000:00:03.1 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f)
0000:00:03.2 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 2.0 Controller

I can't boot the machine with either 2.6.15-23 or 2.6.15-25.
2.6.12-10 works fine. (all -386). Didn't tried -686. I think it's generic.

If I plug out all USB-devices the kernel boots fine. If I hotplug a mouse for example, it crashes again.

dmesg output is here:

Try passing acpi=force to the bootloader.

That doesn't work for me.
Same problem.
Today I made the upgrade to 2.6.15-26-386.
The Kernel still hangs when plugging an USB-device.

I compiled a fresh 2.6.17.6 kernel and system crashed, but I noticed I forgot to provide ACPI support :)
Look at dmesg for the string "apm: overridden by ACPI", or any clue ACPI is work properly. If it is present, ACPI support is enabled. Does crash still occour?

I tried to recompile my kernel with "Power management options -> APM -> APM BIOS support -> Enable PM at boot time" option enabled and everything went well without acpi=force, which I was obliged to use in order to avoid hangs.
Since this affects Edgy too, I think this option should be turned on in newer releases of kernel packages: older PCs which does not enable ACPI by default might suffer from this behaviour.

This is no longer reproducible with later versions.
Please, reopen if you still notice this behaviour. Thank you.
