Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Xrandr's panning feature does not work correctly in Karmic. The mouse pointer keeps "losing its place" while moving outside the boundaries of the viewport. Because of this, certain areas of the display cannot be reached because the mouse position has been offset (i.e. the mouse pointer is displayed in a place different from where it should be).

The command I used to enable panning is:
xrandr --fb 4096x1600 --output LVDS1 --mode 1280x800 --panning 4096x1600

Changing the resolutions does not fix the problem.

However, disabling kernel mode setting by adding the option "nomodeset" to the kernel command line in GRUB fixes this problem. I also have to change LVDS1 to LVDS:
xrandr --fb 4096x1600 --output LVDS --mode 1280x800 --panning 4096x1600

I would like to have a panning display in Ubuntu 9.10 without resorting to nomodeset.

This issue was reported against karmic, so can you confirm if this issue exists with the most recent Lucid Lynx 10.04 Alpha release? ISO CD images are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid/ . Thanks in advance.

The particular problem mentioned in the bug report does not occur in Lucid Lynx Alpha 2.

However, there is a slightly different problem: When panning is enabled, dragging windows by the title bar does not work correctly. There is a noticeable time delay in the movement of the window, i.e. the window does not drag smoothly.

Changing visual effects to None, Normal or Extra does not fix the problem.

Just like in Karmic Koala, the problem is fixed by disabling kernel mode setting using the kernel switch "nomodeset".
