Bug Description

Binary package hint: fglrx-driver

I have latest FGLRX installed thru the repos and they actually work
But at times when I log out all I get is white GDM. And restartin X server doesnt help. Also switching to VTs still produces the white screen. So my only option left is to swtich to VT and press CTRL+ALT+DEL and hope for LINUX to restart because at times it also hardlocks.

Needless to say that with the RADEON driver I didnt have any problems.

tom@tom:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9800 Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5814 (8.25.18)

tom@tom:~$ uname -r
2.6.15-25-k7

I also attach the 'xorg.conf' file

Why is this filed under linux-restricted-modules-2.6.8.1 if you are using 2.6.15-25-k7?

I find that strange also.
Since I picked 'fglrx-driver' under package name and then when I posted this it gave me this:
'linux-restricted-modules-2.6.8.1 (Ubuntu)'

Please fix it if U can since I am only able to change the description. Or if U wish I can also start another BUG REPORT??

2.6.15-25-k7 doesn't seem to be in the system, so I am filing it under linux-restricted-modules-k7 .

Please try installing the generic linux-image-2.6.15-25-386 and see if your problem still remains.

Ok, that package isn't even in the system either.

My problem still remains.

I even tried installing the FGLRX drive from the ATI site using this guide's second method:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Dapper_Installation_Guide#Method_2:_Generating.2FInstalling_Ubuntu_packages_for_the_8.25.18_drivers_in_Ubuntu_Dapper_Manually

But I still have the same problem.

This bug is also reported on ATI Bugzilla : http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239

It seems that there is a workaround :
- For GDM : add AlwaysRestartServer=true in section [daemon] of /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom (it works for me)
- For KDM : Add TerminateServer=true in section [X-:*-Core] of /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc (i'm not sure of the config file, i don't use KDE)

ATI recently released a driver update, you might want to give it a try.

Tanx for the headsup! But bug reports are alredy crawling that this issue still exists even with the latest drivers.
Check this thread at the end:
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239

ps. Am curious is ATI even aware of this bug, since quite a lot of ppl have it, and new threads keep opening on UBUNTUFORUMS.ORG about this bug!

I haven't tried installing FGLRX drivers and probably won't either. Since the open source R300 driver works great on my Radeon 9800PRO.
But after a visit to this site:
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239

The bug is apperantly still present. It's like they say on the above mentioned thread, ATI/AMD have set very low priority for us linuxers.
I will definetely go after NVIDIA with my next PC.
