Bug Description

This bug report is related to the bug report #425312. While that bug is about proper detecting of the modem with network-manager, you can find a lot of debugging of Internet connection reporting there, including syslog, network-manager and modem-manager debug logs. This bug report is continuation of debugging the modem connection issue.

Some things that can be said about current status of the connection issue after some testing:

1. It is not possible to connect using network-manager trhough Gnome nm-applet.

2. It is possible to connect from command line using pon, poff (see comments at bug #425312).

3. It is possible to connect with network-manager after downgrading nozomi driver to that from 2.6.28 kernel version

After some further testing it seems that the 2.6.28 version of nozomi driver is the last one that is working with network-manager, so it seems that the connection problem started after the following commit to the kernel driver:

2009-01-02 Alan Cox tty: kref nozomi

(you can find it at: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.32.y.git;a=history;f=drivers/char/nozomi.c;h=d3400b20444f4f726b7de49e6ff88a5aa78cc938;hb=a1092bf3809c7ec7b730d0cca3bdba964a813147)

The problem seems to be related to multiple open and close of nozomi tty port operations performed when using network-manager connection. I found that the attached patch allows to make Internet connection with network-manager work but when you don't use current ppa repository for network-manager and modem-manager (to make the modem appear in nm-applet you have to use some workaround for #425312 bug - restart modem-manager after inserting the modem card). Usually the connection doesn't work with first attempt, mostly with the second one, but it is the same like it worked with Ubuntu 9.04 (2.6.28 kernel).

This patch is experimental code that tries to bring back some former bechavior of nozomi kernel driver. Though it makes some resoult, it is not provided here as a fix.

Testing again with latest version of network-manager from PPA repository shows that Internet connections works (after applying the previously attached nozomi patch).

There is also Linux kernel bug registered at http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13024 concerning the same issue and it seems that exactly the same fix for nozomi driver has been already proposed there.

For confirmation of the current status:

- Does Lucid work now? It should have gotten the patch mentioned and have that released.
- For Karmic, would the kernel at http://people.canonical.com/~smb/bug505330/ work? I applied the patch there and build those.

Feedback on the test kernel for Karmic should arrive soon. It won't get fixed after end of this week.

Radek,
Can you comment on if this is resolved for the current crack of the day for Lucid based on Stefan's comments above? I'd like to update the status on this particular bug.

Thanks!

I'm sorry, but I already don't have access to the modem, maybe somebody also could test it, and provide some feedback ?

I am the original poster of # 425312. As I needed the connection, I switched back to jaunty for the time being. Today I just installed the lucid-daily and the card now is recognized and I can connect to my network. So for me, the problem is solved in Lucid.
This is for a Option Fusion+ with Qualcomm MSM6275 Chip.

Ok, as it is working in Lucid and we have closed down on Karmic normal updates, I mark this won't fix.
