desktop icons dissappeared, file browser icons can not be reinstalled on desktop

Binary package hint: nautilus
desktop icons (folders, external hard drive icons) have dissappeared. icons are located in "desktop-file brower" i can not drag folders from "desktop-file brower" back on to desktop.
i have also lost "right click" ability on desktop screen.
