Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-desktop

I just upgraded from Breezy Badget to Dapper DRake, and everything looked good. Then I decided to switch over to Kubuntu (kdm login). I used synaptic to add the requiered packages.

After logging on using kdm, the red icon on the upper right launched the familar dialog box, but I saw no option to shutdown the machine. I see the others (log off, switch user, hibernate, etc), but no Shutdown.

Workarounds:
1.) Log off, then use kdm to shutdown the notebook. This is an IBM R40 with 1GB RAM.
or
2.) Switched back to using gdm to login, and that looks fine.

In general Drake feels buggier than Badger (buttons have specks of "dirt" etc).

I would like to confirm this bug. I did a brand new install with Dapper Drake. After the install, the gnome "power button" in the upper right corner showed seven options. The top row was "logout, lockscreen, switch user", while the bottom row was "suspend, hibernate, restart, and shutdown".

I installed all updates with synaptic, and nothing changed. Then I used synaptic again, and installed the "kubuntu-desktop" package. I told the installer that I wanted to use kdm instead of gdm. I logged into the gnome session using kdm, and now the power button in gnome is different. It pops up a top row of "logout, lockscreen, switch user", and the bottom row is "suspend, hibernate", but it doesn't show restart or shutdown any more.

Is this still happening? If so can you please run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade.

I run Update Manager regularly, so I'm current.

It was only an issue when I tried swithing to KDM, as I recall, so I
use GDM now. The was a bigger bug (I think) that caused my system to
lock up randomly. I think the recent update in the X server(?) fixed
it.

Sorry to say but, overall - Dapper seems flakier than Badger.

I Too can confirm this bug.

I yesterday installed a brand new Dapper Drake on a Hp laptop.
I never installed KDE or KDM but I too have only four options behind the red powerswitch, Logout, lock screen, Switch user and Hibernate.
I've been upgrading immediately after the install, so I don't know which update stole my power down option, only know i'd like to have it back ;)

Alot of times if you use startx to start X you will lose the shutdown and reboot buttons.

If I remember correctly, for some strange reason, if you use kde with gdm, or gnome with kdm, you don't get the "poweroff" or "reboot" buttons.

I've noticed what John said too. Whenever I run KDE by using startx, the only options I get from K Menu->Log Out is End Current Session, which just takes me back to the command line.

Having shutdown and restart options regardless of how KDE was started would be beneficial to the power user as well as newer users who don't know the 'sudo shutdown -h now' command.

I have just installed 64bit Dapper on a brand new computer and have no restart or shutdown button. I did not have this with several other installs with 32bit version.
Does anyone have any suggestions why, and.or a fix? I have not done updates onthis install.

It's been a while, but can anyone confirm this bug on Edgy now?

I think as long as X is started automatically, not by using startx, this shouldn't be a problem.

Definitely confirmed due to responses, however I cannot reproduce in Dapper/Edgy/Feisty.

Im using Ubuntu 6.10 with Kubuntu and Xubuntu added to it... i had this problem and found out it was not a bug... To fix it goto System/Administration/Login Window... there make sure you check show actions in the menu bar, close it and check and your buttons should have returned... if this worked for you give me a holler...

This problem exists still in Feisty. I have both Gnome and KDE installed and I use Gdm. In Ubuntu 6.10, all was fine. But now: Only Logout Option. When I choose it, I get a black screen and the pc freezes.

Same thing after upgrade from edgy to feisty: switch user buttons disappeared everywhere and the log out menu only contains a single button: log out, which crashes the whole machine (doesn't even respond to ping)

I hate to be a me too, but... me too, was there before Fiesty, now gone. In my case Log put takes you to a log in screen, and from there you can choose Options Shutdown, not my preffered method...

This set up is AMD64, Fiesty and there is Gnome, Xubuntu and Kubuntu installed, Kubuntu is default and preferred.

I had the same problem after upgrading to feisty beta.
For me this problem only exists, if my default display manager is gdm.

So a workaround (not a solution) is to enable kdm as your dsplay manager.
Use "sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm" and select kdm as your display manager.
Make sure that show actions is enabled in the KDE session managers settings (see Mentoro's post).
After that the shutdown, hibernate .. buttons should reappear.
In GNOME all those buttons are shown no matter what display manager you use.

Can confirm in 32-bit Feisty. Was working all right before the upgrade from Edgy.

For the record, I installed Xubuntu Edgy, installed KDE, and now I upgraded to Feisty, so I am using gdm as well.

I experienced the same problem when I upgraded from edgy to feisty. I switched to KDM and that worked for me. But now I get a black screen on log out. I think it is because I am using the proprietary ATI drivers. I had to set GDM autorestart to true to get rid of the black screen I guess the same thing would work for KDM.

Now that we've confirmed this is a KDM issue, reassigning to kdebase (which contains kdm).
