Bug Description

Binary package hint: banshee

Using:
Banshe 1.6 Beta 2 (1.5.1)
Ubuntu 9.10

This is definately a feature request: a genre filter pane.
The preferences window should allow the user to select the panes he wants to be visible. The options would be: Artist, Album, and Genre. Yes, I know we can use the genre: tag in the search field, but this option is in other players (Rhythmbox, iTunes and Songbird come to mind) and is very useful for creating "on-the-fly" playlist (when a user wants to hear to all the songs in a particular genre). Also, artist and album are not enough when the music library goes beyond a few hundreds of songs, and I'm pretty sure that several users fall in this category.

This bug has already been treated there, and even a patch has been developed, then there is no reason why this is not implemented already.

Included is a (not so good) mockup of what I'm talking about.

This seems incredibly fundamental to managing a music library - I just switched from Rhythmbox to Banshee and love everything except this oversight!

i find this almost essential for any music library management tool.
fingers crossed for an imminent introduction of the feature :)

@Eduardo, have you checked if this behaviour is still occurring in banshee 1.7.3 release (Ubuntu Maverick ships this version)?

@Kamus
I upgraded to Lucid and started to use the latest version (I think):
http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/banshee-daily/ubuntu lucid main
The 'About' dialog reports version 1.7.4
Perhaps I'm missing some checkbox in the preferences window? Or I necessarily have to be in Maverick?

Thanks for your reply @Eduardo, is not necessary to be in Maverick (but for testing purposes would be nice heh). Any way, Have you checked if this issue is still reproducible with that version?

Yes, that's what I meant on the previous comment. No matter what version I install, there is no genre pane.

How is this coming for Natty? I hope we see it implemented as Banshee will be default.

The developer responsible for the Genre feature has been through a change of jobs and moving to a different country and has been unavailable for some time. However he has started working on Banshee again recently, while this bug is high on his personal todo list there is a mount of bug reports needing attention from him.

If Ubuntu feels the need to ship something, there is a genre browser patch, but Alex seems to have plans for something more. You can always ship the few lines of code if Alex doesn't find time to finish the feature the way he wants.

This is preventing me moving to banshee form rhythmbox. I'm not alone.

I too am severely jaded about this oversight. It seems like it would be a de facto feature for media players at this point. Thought for sure that it would be in 2.0.

Just FYI : there is still some work going on this here : https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=540873
The roadmap (https://live.gnome.org/Banshee/Roadmap) has been changed recently and the patch is currently planned for inclusion in 2.4, which probably means ubuntu 12.04 as version 2.2 of banshee will be included in 11.10
