The Empathy roster should display avatars to the left

The avatars are pretty useless for finding the contact you're looking for when they're located on the right side; it's very unnatural for (Western) people to browse along the right edge of an object. Rather show them to the left, and perhaps have a small overlay indicate their presence status.

I'm going to reject this bug from hundredpapercuts because it does not fix an obvious bug; many people seem to be fine with avatars on the right.

I do like your suggestion of combining avatar and status icon, though -- be sure to report your idea upstream!
